Most of the financial press defines an economic recession as a decline in any country’s gross domestic product (GDP), or negative real economic growth, for two or more successive quarters of a year.

Here in the US, the National Bureau of Economic Research is the government’s official source of economic turning point dates. They say when an economic downturn has officially become a recession.

They say, “A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.”

That’s very helpful right?!?
